About the Artist
Originally from New Zealand, I have lived and worked in London since 1986. I spent several years working in an art cabaret group, performing extensively in London and throughout Europe.
My interests have also taken me into studying millinery design, culminating in a Master of Arts degree at the Royal College of Arts in London. After graduating from the MA course, I worked in the fashion and millinery industry for two years before returning to fine art as my focus.
My work is partly concerned with autobiography and my upbringing in rural New Zealand. This comes through not just in the content of the work but also in my attraction to bold colours and a sense of grand design. Some of the paintings are abstract, others figurative, sometimes including human or part-human creatures.
In my painting and 3-D work I like to work with ordinary, recyclable materials – cardboard, newspaper, biro, used textiles. I have recently been working on a series of wearable pieces – a many-panelled ‘multi-dress’ designed for nine occupants, a set of wearable face- and body-cones, and a version of classical ladies’ chopines.
